Ark 1.0 is based on a sheet of paper that has been cut, folded, and hand-stitched together using a technique derived from Japanese bookbinding. The technique has been the driving force in the process and has formed the basis for the exploration of form. The result is a self-supporting paper body with a visible construction and an internal framework that holds the light source. The straight sides, folds, and hand-sewn joints create a play of shadows and lines that makes the character of the lamp change with its surroundings and the viewer’s position. The stitches along the sides of the form function as both construction and ornament. They contribute to the object’s rhythm while emphasizing its structural logic. The stitches reveal the manual work and thereby highlight the craftsmanship behind the lamp.
